Embark on the adventure of a lifetime as you journey deep into the soul of Australia's most spectacular and remote wilderness. This exciting 5-day eco-safari will transport you to the vast, untamed expanses of Lake Eyre, Birdsville, Marree, the Flinders Ranges and the South Australian Outback.
Your adventure begins as you cross Goyder's Line – the historic boundary of reliable rainfall – watching as the landscape transforms before your eyes from the lush green farmlands of South Australia's mid-north to the russet-red earth and endless blue skies of the true outback. This dramatic transition marks your entry into a world where time moves differently, where the pace of life slows to match the ancient rhythms of the land.
The crown jewel of this incredible journey is a full-day deluxe scenic flight. On Day 3, you'll take to the skies for an unforgettable aerial adventure over Lake Eyre, Australia's largest salt lake, and the historic outback town of Birdsville. This isn't just a flight; it's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to witness the sheer magnitude and raw beauty of the Australian continent from a bird's-eye perspective.
From your window seat – guaranteed on every flight! – you'll soar over the white expanse of Lake Eyre North and South, a natural phenomenon that transforms from a vast salt pan to a spectacular inland sea depending on the season. Marvel at the mysterious Marree Man, one of the world's largest geoglyphs etched into the earth, visible only from the air. Your aerial journey continues over the Channel Country, the serpentine waterways of Cooper Creek, and the pristine wilderness of Goyder Lagoon and Coongie Lakes, revealing the intricate network of Australia's inland water systems in all their glory.
Experience the thrill of venturing deep underground into an abandoned copper mine at Blinman, where a local will guide you through the labyrinthine shafts and tunnels that once echoed with the sounds of hardy Cornish miners. This extraordinary subterranean adventure offers a fascinating glimpse into Australia's mining heritage, as you explore the very depths where determined prospectors once sought their fortunes in the unforgiving outback terrain.
Throughout your journey, keep your eyes peeled for Australia's iconic wildlife in their natural habitat. The rugged terrain of the Flinders Ranges and surrounding outback is home to kangaroos, emus, and magnificent wedge-tailed eagles soaring overhead on thermals rising from the sun-baked landscape. These encounters with Australia's native fauna, particularly prolific in the golden light of late afternoon, provide magical moments that will remain etched in your memory forever.
Walk in the footsteps of the Adnyamathanha people as you traverse the Red Sandhill country, where thousands of years of sacred beliefs and cultural traditions are woven into the very fabric of the landscape. This ancient terrain holds stories that predate written history, offering you a profound connection to Australia's First Nations heritage and a deeper understanding of the spiritual significance of this remarkable land.
Your culinary journey is as memorable as the landscapes you'll explore. Indulge in the famous "feral platter" at the Prairie Hotel, featuring unique local delicacies that showcase the distinctive flavours of the outback.
Journey home through the world-renowned Clare Valley, one of South Australia's premier wine regions. Visit Seven Hills Cellars, built by Jesuits in 1851 and recognised as the first winery ever established in the Clare Valley. Here, surrounded by rolling vineyards and the stately St Aloysius Church, you'll enjoy a carefully curated flight of five premium wines, providing the perfect finale to your outback odyssey.
For those seeking even more aerial thrills, optional scenic flights over the ancient amphitheatre of Wilpena Pound and the rugged peaks of the Flinders Ranges are available. These additional flights offer the only way to truly appreciate the scale and majesty of this 800-million-year-old geological wonder, known to the local Adnyamathanha people as Ikara.
This extraordinary 5-day eco-safari promises to deliver life-long memories that you'll treasure forever. Don't just visit the outback – experience it, feel it, and become part of its timeless story.
