Lochiel, a small town located in the Mid North region of South Australia, sits 125 km north of Adelaide. Nestled on the western shore of Lake Bumbunga and the eastern base of the Hummocks Range, the town is traversed by the Augusta Highway, a segment of Highway 1, which runs between the township and the lake.
Lochiel was officially surveyed in 1869, shortly after the establishment of the Hundred of Cameron. In 1887, under the District Councils Act, Lochiel and the surrounding area were incorporated into the District Council of Port Wakefield. However, due to local lobbying efforts, the control of the Hundred of Cameron was transferred from Wakefield council to the District Council of Snowtown the following year. This solidified a strong bond between Lochiel and Snowtown, rather than Port Wakefield, which is further away.
In 2014, the historic Lochiel Hotel burned down. The building was a 150-year-old landmark, and the town's only hotel. Plans are underway to reconstruct this historic building for the community.
