Woomera

South Australia's far-north

Woomera, or Woomera Village, is located approximately 446 km north of Adelaide. It is the domestic area of RAAF Base Woomera, which is historically significant as a defence and aerospace testing range. Established in the 1940s, it initialy served as a site for rocket testing, and has since been continued to be used for rocket, missile, and weapsons testing, contributing to advancements in space exploration and defence technologies. Notably, the Woomera Prohibited Area remains one of the largest military testing ranges in the world. The town was initially created to house and support the staff of the facility.

The town is also known for its connection to the local Aboriginal people, particularly the Antakirinja Matu-Yankunytjatjara Nation. This connection is reflected in the region's rich Indigenous culture and history, with various sites of significance to the local communities. The traditional custodians have a deep spiritual connection to the land, which is evident in their ongoing cultural practices and storytelling.
