Whyalla

South Australia's eyre-peninisula

Whyalla, known as the "Steel City," is a significant industrial and coastal hub located on the eastern coast of the Eyre Peninsula. Established in 1901 as Hummock's Hill to support the transport of iron ore, its identity was forged in the fires of its integrated steelworks and the clatter of its once-booming shipyards, which produced vessels like the HMAS Whyalla during World War II.

As part of the historic "Iron Triangle" with Port Augusta and Port Pirie, Whyalla's heritage is deeply rooted in its role as a major port for exporting iron ore from the nearby Middleback Range, a practice that continues to this day and defines its economic landscape.

For tourists, Whyalla offers an extraordinary blend of industrial heritage and natural wonders. A key attraction is the Whyalla Maritime Museum, where visitors can tour the HMAS Whyalla, the first ship ever built in the city, and explore exhibits on its shipbuilding and mining past.
