Warooka is a small town located on the southern Yorke Peninsula in South Australia, about 228 km west of Adelaide. It is often referred to as the "Gateway to the bottom end of the Yorke Peninsula," serving as a key service center for the surrounding agricultural region. The town was officially established in 1876, primarily by Irish settlers who developed the area for sheep and wheat farming. A Catholic Church was constructed that same year, marking a significant early development in the town's history.
In 1902, Warooka was struck by a notable earthquake, one of the first in Australia to result in fatalities. The quake caused considerable damage to buildings, including collapsing chimneys and structures. Despite this, Warooka remained a vibrant rural community, with local attractions like the Corny Point Lighthouse and Flaherty’s Beach nearby, drawing visitors interested in exploring the coastal beauty and history of the region.
