Smoky Bay is a picturesque and tranquil coastal town on the west coast of the Eyre Peninsula, located 40 kilometres southeast of Ceduna. The bay was named by explorer Matthew Flinders in 1802, who observed smoke from fires lit by the local Aboriginal people.
Originally established as a port town named Wallanippie in 1913, it has since evolved into a popular holiday destination, cherished for its pristine, calm waters and friendly community atmosphere. The town's history is also linked to early whaling activities, with heritage-listed remnants of the Port Collinson Whaling Station found nearby.
Today, Smoky Bay is most famous for its world-class oyster industry, established in 1988.
