Mount Barker

South Australia's adelaide-hills

Mount Barker is the largest town in South Australia's Adelaide Hills, located about 33 kilometers southeast of Adelaide. It serves as a key service hub for the region and is one of the fastest-growing areas in the state. Known for its mix of historical charm and modern conveniences, the town features heritage buildings, such as Auchendarroch House, which was originally built as a hotel in 1860 and is now part of a modern entertainment complex.

Outdoor enthusiasts enjoy exploring Mount Barker Summit, offering panoramic views of the Adelaide Hills, as well as the Laratinga Wetlands, a prime spot for birdwatching and walking trails. The town is also home to the SteamRanger Heritage Railway, which operates vintage steam trains connecting Mount Barker with other scenic destinations like Strathalbyn and Victor Harbor.

Mount Barker’s rich agricultural history includes the introduction of subterranean clover, a crop that revolutionized local farming practices. Today, the town continues to thrive with attractions like local farmers' markets, the renowned Prancing Pony Brewery, and nearby wineries.
