Mannum is a historic town located on the west bank of the Murray River, about 85 km east of Adelaide, South Australia. It is recognized as the birthplace of the Australian paddle steamer industry. The town's development began in the 1850s, largely driven by the efforts of William Randell, who launched the first paddle steamer on the Murray River, the Mary Ann, in 1853. This innovation initiated a thriving river trade, making Mannum a key port for transporting goods along the Murray.
Mannum also became a center for agricultural machinery production when the Shearer brothers established their blacksmith and machinery business in 1877. Notably, David Shearer constructed Australia's first steam-powered car in 1897, showcasing the town’s engineering heritage.
The town faced challenges, such as the devastating 1956 Murray River floods, which severely impacted the community. Today, Mannum is a popular tourist destination, offering river cruises, houseboat experiences, and a rich history, particularly through the Mannum Dock Museum, which houses the historic Paddle Steamer Marion.
