Loxton is a town on the south bank of the River Murray in the Riverland region of South Australia. It is located on the lands of the Erawirung people who occupied the area before the arrival of Europeans. The town has a significant pioneering past. Loxton's primary productions are agriculture and horticulture; the town is known for its iconic citrus farms and has produced award-winning wines.
A highlight of Loxton is the Loxton Historical Village, which tells the stories of the region's early settlers and their families, displayed in over 45 recreated buildings and exhibits on the banks of the Murray River. All the buildings and displays have been relocated or built on site, most accurately replicating original constructions from Loxton's pioneering years. Glimpse the lives of these early settlers, their churches, schools, homes and general stores.
Other points of interest include a magnificent old river red gum, the Tree of Knowledge, which marks the depth of the Murray River flood levels over the years, and the Loxton Railway Memorial, which highlights the old days of transport in the region. Wherever you look, history is woven into every part of Loxton.
