Lake Frome Downs Station, tucked away in the breathtaking Flinders Ranges of South Australia, lies 425 kilometres north of Adelaide. This historic pastoral estate, founded in 1851, boasts a rich heritage that has played a crucial role in the evolution of sheep farming in the region. Its contributions have notably bolstered the wool industry, a vital pillar of South Australia’s economy for many years.
The station’s name pays tribute to nearby Lake Frome, known as Munda by the Adnyamathanha people. European settlers named it after Edward Charles Frome, who carefully mapped the region in 1843. In a gesture of cultural recognition, the lake was officially given a dual name in 2004: Lake Frome / Munda.
Covering an impressive area of approximately 304,000 hectares, Lake Frome Downs Station is an expansive territory that has recently undergone an investment programme. This initiative focuses on enhancing vital infrastructure, such as water supply, fencing, housing, staff quarters, and even an airstrip. The management of the property is centred around sustainability.
