Inneston is a delightful slice of history nestled within the stunning Dhilba Guuranda-Innes National Park on the picturesque Yorke Peninsula of South Australia. This historic township, established in the late 19th century, came to life when William Robert Innes’ company began mining gypsum near the serene Inneston Lake. The town blossomed from the early 1900s until the 1930s, supplying essential materials for plaster and cement during a booming construction era.
Today, Inneston exists as a ghost town, the last remnant of an early 20th-century gypsum mining complex. The remnants of this once-bustling settlement, including the old schoolhouse, general store, and various mining structures, stand as poignant reminders of the industrious spirit that once characterised Inneston.
This land has been traditionally owned by the Narungga nation, who have been its custodians for countless generations, weaving their rich cultural heritage into the very fabric of the landscape.
