Dhilba Guuranda-Innes National Park is a true treasure nestled on the Yorke Peninsula in South Australia! Established in 1970 and named after the nearby Innes homestead dating back to the late 19th century, this park is a rich tapestry of history and stunning landscapes. Once bustling with activity as part of the Innes Mining Company’s operations in the late 1800s, this area was primarily focused on the mining and shipping of copper. Today, you can still find remnants of this industrious past scattered throughout the park, including old ruins and mining equipment that whisper tales of days gone by.
One of the park's standout features is the historic Cape Spencer Lighthouse, built in 1900. Not only does it reflect the region's rich maritime heritage, but it also offers breathtaking views of the surrounding waters. Furthermore, the park is home to the Ethel Shipwreck and the ruins of the former township of Inneston, which once thrived during the mining boom.
The park holds deep cultural significance for the local Aboriginal people, particularly the Narungga Nation, who have called this land home for thousands of years. It encompasses vital sites that underscore their connection to the land, including traditional fishing and hunting grounds.
