Elliston

South Australia's eyre-peninisula

Elliston is a small, picturesque coastal town situated on the shores of the spectacular Waterloo Bay on the western side of South Australia’s Eyre Peninsula. Established in 1878, the town has a rich and complex history, originally serving as a central port for early pastoralists.

It was named by Governor Sir William Jervois after Ellen Liston, a respected local governess, though its history is also marked by the tragic Waterloo Bay Massacre of 1869, a violent conflict between European settlers and the local Nauo Aboriginal people.

Geographically, Elliston’s coastline presents a dramatic contrast, with the calm, reef-protected waters of Waterloo Bay on one side and rugged, high cliffs pounded by the Southern Ocean on the other, creating a stunning and diverse landscape.
