Ediacaran Biota Fossil Site

South Australia's flinders-ranges

Brachina Gorge in the Flinders Ranges is a significant site for Ediacaran biota fossils, marking the base of the Ediacaran Period with a "Golden Spike" GSSP (Global Stratotype Section and Point, a globally recognised marker defining the start of the Ediacaran Period). The area preserves fossil imprints of early, soft-bodied organisms, including various forms of Ediacaran biota that lived approximately 580-541 million years ago. The discovery of these fossils provides crucial insights into the evolution of life on Earth, specifically the emergence of complex, multicellular organisms following the Cryogenian glaciation.
