Copley is tucked away in the Flinders Ranges, located approximately 600 km north of Adelaide. This quaint community is home to the Bush Bakery and Quandong Café, and it is often linked to the nearby mining activities as well as the breathtaking landscapes of the Outback. Initially known as Leigh Creek after a nearby property, the name was later changed to Copley in tribute to William Copley, who was the South Australian Commissioner of Crown Lands at the time.
Established on 27 August 1891, Copley originally functioned as a service point for the surrounding pastoral lands. The town boasts a rich history associated with early settlers and the region's development, with traces of its past still evident today. Presently, Copley's economy largely revolves around tourism and agriculture, with sheep grazing being a prominent feature.
The land surrounding Copley was traditionally owned by the Adnyamathanha people, who share a profound connection to it. Their culture and history play a vital role in the region, and there are ongoing efforts to honour and recognise their heritage.
