Bookpurnong is a quaint yet historically important locality nestled within the Riverland region of South Australia. It's primarily celebrated for its lush agricultural landscape and its close ties to the Murray River. The region encompasses the Murray River along with its accompanying floodplains and wetlands, as well as dryland agriculture, irrigated horticulture, and residential areas.
Among the local cultural sites that have emerged since European settlement are the Bookpurnong church and cemetery, the Lockmaster’s house at Lock 4, the old post office, and several other historical buildings. Lock and Weir No. 4 is a notable site listed on the Register of the National Estate, and just to the north of Bookpurnong Lock 4 lies the Gurra Gurra Lake Area.
Originally, this area was home to the Ngarrindjeri people. The name "Bookpurnong" itself has Aboriginal origins, derived from two Indigenous words: “Bookani,” meaning swimming place, and “Purnong,” which translates to wide open space.
