Beltana is an extraordinary town that holds State Heritage status, nestled within the Flinders Ranges of South Australia. This region is famed for its rugged mountains and arid landscapes. Settlers began to arrive in the area during the 1850s and 60s, with the town being officially surveyed in 1873. Many of the original stone buildings still stand proudly today.
Renowned for its historical importance, Beltana played a vital role during the formative years of South Australia. A highlight for visitors is the old Beltana Station, which was once a thriving sheep station. The area is also alive with wildlife, including kangaroos, emus, and a variety of bird species. The resilient flora features hardy plants like saltbush and mulga, which flourish in the challenging environment.
Beltana was pivotal in the early settlement of the state, serving as a key service centre and being home to the Australian Inland Mission, the precursor to the Royal Flying Doctor Service. It also played an essential role in the Overland Telegraph.
The traditional custodians of this land are the Adnyamathanha people, who possess a rich cultural heritage and a deep connection to the area.
