Barmera

South Australia's riverland

Barmera located on the picturesque shores of Lake Bonney in South Australia, is a charming town brimming with historical richness and cultural importance. Founded in the early 20th century, Barmera emerged as a hub for irrigation farming, thanks to the development of the nearby River Murray. It is believed that the town’s name originates from the local Aboriginal word for 'the place of the water', with the Ngarrindjeri people being the traditional custodians of this land. The lake was named in honour of Charles Bonney, who first laid eyes on it during his overland journey from Sydney to Adelaide in 1838.

A significant milestone in Barmera's history was the creation of the Barmera Irrigation Area in the 1940s, which revolutionised the local economy and agriculture, particularly in the realm of fruit and vegetable production.
